GBM today at 5pm + Poll results!
Dear SWC,
On Saturday, December 11th, we held a poll assessing the satisfaction of student workers with the current contract proposed by the University on December 9th, along with an evaluation of possible forms of escalation. In the poll, student workers were asked to rate each of the major areas of the contract still under dispute on a scale from 1 to 4, with 1 indicating something abysmal and completely unacceptable, and 4 indicating a contract provision acceptable as is. Any ranking under 4 indicates that the language is not acceptable as it stands and must be improved. The aggregate results of these rankings by the unit are collated into a table below.
Mean | Median | Mode | |
---|---|---|---|
UNION SECURITY | 1.99 | 2 | 1 |
NEUTRAL THIRD PARTY ARBITRATION | 2.22 | 2 | 2 |
CONTRACT DURATION | 2.26 | 2 | 1 |
RECOGNITION | 2.28 | 2 | 1 |
COMPENSATION | 2.39 | 2 | 2 |
DENTAL/VISION | 2.86 | 3 | 3 |
CHILDCARE | 2.95 | 3 | 3 |
Put more simply, over 80% of respondents have categorically rejected the University’s proposals on each of the following: Union Security, Contract Duration, NDH, Recognition and Compensation.
In order to achieve a just contract that actually addresses our needs, 85.6% of respondents on strike supported continuing the strike into the grading period, while 65.6% supported the continuation of the strike into the Spring semester. More student workers have responded to this poll than any other weekly poll conducted during the strike.
These poll results unequivocally indicate that we have much left to fight for, and much fight left in us. Moreover, they indicate that we need to have a lengthy discussion on the subject of the results of the poll and strike strategy at a GBM tonight. Please join us at 5 PM EST to do that.
In solidarity,
The Process Committee
