Welcome to Student Workers of Columbia. Together, we represent over 3,000 graduate and undergraduate student workers at the University.

ABOUT OUR CONTRACT

In January 2022, after a 10-week strike, SWC ratified our first contract with Columbia University. Under this contract, workers are entitled to:

  • Yearly raises of a minimum of 3% for the duration of the contract, plus an additional 2% bonus while on appointment to cover union dues.

  • A minimum of $22.50/ hour for hourly workers in Academic Year 2024-2025 (AY 24/25). Access to full arbitration or mediation in the event of workplace harassment or discrimination.

  • Access to a union-run healthcare fund to reimburse eligible medical expenses. Reimbursement of up to 75% of the cost of the premium of optional dental insurance.

  • A child care subsidy of $5,500 per child in AY 24/25 for children under the age of 6 not yet attending kindergarten.

  • An additional semester of funding eligibility for students who take parental leave.

  • Up to a semester of transitional funding for students who change advisors due to discrimination, harassment, or other inappropriate behavior.

SIGNING YOUR UNION CARD

If you are currently employed providing research or instructional labor for the University, or if you will be employed in that capacity in the future, this contract applies to you and you are eligible to join the union! Union members pay a one-time $10 initiation fee to join, as well as 1.44% of your gross compensation in dues while employed in a bargaining unit position. Our union is funded entirely through union dues; they help keep us strong, organized, and ready to fight for the dignified working conditions we deserve.
